About Empire Obstetrics and Gynecology
For years the practice has simply been known as Bartels, Powalski, and Weissman, MD. It wasn’t until the spring of 2020 that they decided to change the name to Empire OB/GYN.
Although the current practice began in 1985, the history of what exists started in 1962 when Doctors Powalski and Bartels’ fathers had started their own practices, of which were simply known as Robert J Powalski, MD PC, and John D. Bartels, MD PC. While some may have viewed them as competitors, they were actually great friends that lived next door to one another. As a result, Doctors Powalski and Bartels Jr have known each other their whole lives.
Upon completing his Residency Training in 1984 Dr. Edward Bartels joined his father’s practice. Shortly after that, Dr. Powalski Sr. suddenly became ill, and unfortunately passed away in 1985. At that time, Dr. Powalski Jr was still in Residency Training. Because of their great friendship, Doctors Bartels (father and son) covered Dr. Powalski Sr. ‘s practice, until Dr. Powalski Jr graduated from Residency in 1987. At that time, they merged the two practices together. A few years later, they were joined by Dr. Mark Weissman, and have since grown to seven providers, with two locations; one in Kenmore, and one in Depew.
In addition to adding skilled OB/GYN physicians, over the years the practice has expanded in size and scope. Beyond pregnancy-and-childbirth related procedures, the practice’s capabilities for gynecologic procedures have surpassed traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy to include the use of robotic surgical equipment that interfaces with the surgeons and offers patients a vastly improved experience. While the practice may have changed in size and technology over the years, there is one thing that hasn’t changed since 1962: the practice has maintained the commitment to providing patients with the highest level of quality healthcare.
